The Fish Bite September by Tom Welch
|
September is another awesome month for fishing
especially if you want to catch Lake Trout, Salmon or
Walleyes and all three can be had on Lake Superior.
The Lakers have moved into the shallow waters and
can readily be caught in water from 10 to 150 feet.
Sounds like a big range in depth, but it's not. Good
detection equipment will help you get them located.
The Lakers have been hitting well by Outer Island
and the mud flats, however we caught them as close
in as the south channel outside Long Island.
Walleyes are being taken from Washburn to Ashland
in the Chequamegon Bay. Salmon are present near
the mouths of the creeks and rivers waiting for much
needed rains for a real turn on.
Speaking of a turn on's, fall sky's
present some beautiful sunrises and
sunsets. Take advantage of them
while your out there. Fall colors will
also be here soon.
Elsewhere, waters are beginning to
cool and the walleyes are doing well in
most lakes. A good sign of an
abundant fall harvest. I am going to go
check out Big Eau Pleine Reservoir to
get started on my walleye supply and
then try the Mighty Mississippi later
on. Wissota is producing well and is
an easy place to get enough Walleyes
to make a good meal. Weed lines are
good but it seems they are all over
right now and are even being caught
in 35 feet of water.
Smalleys have started to bang lures
again and the big sucker minnows are
now a great bait for the Muskie. The
big sucker minnows under a huge
bobber starts now. Maybe you can get
a monster Northern Pike too. Head for
the shallows and have a good time.
Deep water crappies have been fun
this past month and will continue thru
September. Get these big suspended
rascals for a good and tasty meal.
Look in 20 to 30 feet of water.
Sturgeon are a favorite for the month
of September also. Lots of fisherman
are trying for them below the dams,
powerhouses and in the rivers. Seems
like they want the water moving but at
the same time be careful one doesn't
end up jumping into your boat out on
the big lake. At present their
acrobatics can be seen most any
morning with a fun aerial display over
the lake. They can be caught on
anything from homemade bait to
nightcrawlers and even minnows. My
favorite will always be crawlers or a
small piece of cut bait. Smelt are
good!!!
Enjoy the beautiful weather we get this
time of year and most important, keep
a tight line.
